Special Communiqué on CPV General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's Passing

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, the President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, the Central Committee of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front, and the bereaved family, announce with great sadness:


Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, Secretary of the Central Military Commission, born on 14 April 1944 in Dong Hoi Commune, Dong Anh Rural District, Hanoi, currently residing at No. 5, Thien Quang Street, Nguyen Du Ward, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi. Joined the public service in 1967, inducted into the Communist Party of Viet Nam on 19 December 1967. Member of the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th Party Central Committee. Member of the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th Politburo. Member of the 8th Politburo Standing Committee. President of the 11th and 12th Legislatures of the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam. General Secretary of the 11th, 12th and 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam. President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam for 2016 - 2021. Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council. Secretary of the Central Military Commission. Member of the Standing Committee of the Public Security Central Party Committee. Chairman of the Central Steering Committee on preventing and combating corruption and wrongdoing. Member of the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th Legislatures of the National Assembly. 


After a period of serious illness, despite the tireless treatment efforts from the Party, State and the collective of leading doctors and experts, and the utmost care from his family, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, due to old age and grave illness, passed away at 13:38 hours on 19 July 2024 (14 June of the Year of the Dragon, Lunar Calendar), Military Hospital 108, Hanoi, at the age of 80.


Throughout nearly 60 years of service, Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong made numerous extraordinary contributions to the prideworthy revolutionary cause of the Party and nation. He was awarded the Order of the Gold Star, Medal of 55 years of Party Membership, and many other Vietnamese and international honors.


The passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is an immense loss to our Party, State and People, and to his family. In mourning and remembrance for his departure, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, the President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, and the Central Committee of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front hereby decide that the funerary service for General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong be held as a State Funeral.

Hometown: Dong Hoi Commune, Dong Anh Ward, Ha Noi.

Date of joining public service: 5 December 1967. 

Date of induction into the Communist Party of Viet Nam: 19 December 1967.

December 1967: Staff member, Documentary Section, The Study Review (Now the Communist Review). Inducted into the Communist Party of Viet Nam on 19 December 1967.

August 1968 - August 1973: Editorial Staff, The Communist Review. Field Training in Thanh Oai Rural District, Ha Tay Province (Now Hanoi). Youth League Secretary, The Communist Review. 

September 1973 - April 1976: Research Student, Political Economy Faculty, Nguyen Ai Quoc High-level Party Academy (Now the Ho Chi Minh National Political Academy). 

May 1976 - August 1980: Editorial Staff, Party-Building Committee, The Communist Review, Deputy Party Secretary at the aforementioned.

September 1980 - August 1981: Studied Russian Language, Nguyen Ai Quoc High-level Party Academy. 

September 1981 - July 1983: Research Fellow, then presented his Candidate of Science (Now Doctoral) dissertation in Historical Science (Party-Building major) at the Soviet Academy of Sciences, under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union

At the Mid-Term 7th National Party Congress (January 1994), he was elected to the Party Central Committee. He was member of the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th Party Central Committee. 

August 1996 - February 1998: Deputy Municipal Party Secretary, Ha Noi City, concurrently Chairman of the Party University Affairs Board, directly in charge of the Ha Noi Municipal Information and Education Board.

At the 4th Meeting of the 8th Party Central Committee (December 1997), he was elected to the Politburo. He was member of the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th Politburo.

February 1998 - January 2000: In charge of Party's Ideological, Cultural and Educational works.

March 1998 - November 2006: Deputy Chairman, Central Ideological Committee, then President of the Central Ideological Committee, in charge of Party ideological works (November 2001 - August 2006).

August 1999 - April 2001: Member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam.

For his many extraordinary contributions and achievements in service of the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation, Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong was awarded the Order of the Gold Star, Medal of 55 years of Party Membership, and many other Vietnamese and international awards and orders. These include the "National Gold Medal" from the President of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, the "Friendship Medal" from the Party and State of the People's Republic of China, the "Lenin Prize," the most prestigious award of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, and the and "José Marti Order" of the Communist Party and the State of the Republic of Cuba.​
